Sarah Laidlaw was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia. At a young age Sarah found an outlet for her ideas and imagination through a hairdressing apprenticeship with world-renowned hairdresser Bennie Tognini. Her years at Tognini’s Hair Workshop were a time of intense training and concentrated creativity. She won extensive State and National awards and her work was widely published in national, international and trade magazines. Working in a salon that focused on producing progressive shows, avant-garde creations and cutting edge photographic work defined Sarah’s love for the world of fashion. She has since established an impressive portfolio working across photography, film and television, and has worked with a distinguished list of clients and photographers.
In much of her hair work, Sarah fuses the old with the new, the sharp and angular with the soft and luscious.
After completing her apprenticeship, she looked outside Hairdressing to add skills to her arsenal. Sarah worked as a fashion stylist for 4 years, styling commercial and avant-garde shoots.
During this time, her love affair with the power of make-up began. She quickly discovered a talent for the craft and commenced freelancing, gaining extensive popularity as a makeup artist.
Self-taught, Sarah has developed her own unique makeup style for which she has become renowned: classic beauty with a contemporary edge. From pure, minimal looks to complete theatrical transformations, Sarah is drawn to the freedom of expression and magic that makeup provides.
Having now worked as a session hair stylist for 22 years and also as a makeup artist for 16 of those, Sarah’s relocation to Sydney 5 years ago has cemented her as one of the most sought-after talents in the industry. Her inspiration is gathered from her appreciation of art, haute couture, photography, film and music. Sarah’s work reflects an artistic sensibility, which coupled with her attention to detail, produces a continually flawless result.
She was awarded with the prestigious Australian Hair Session Stylist of the Year Award consecutively in 2010 and 2011.
Her down to earth demeanor, understanding of the creative process, discerning sense of aestheticism and versatile style make her a vital component to a successful shoot. With a powerful set of skills in both hairdressing and makeup artistry, Sarah is the complete package.
Sarah’s creative work has been published in titles such as Grazia Italia, Harpers Bazaar, Madison, Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Karen, Freundin, Grazia Australia, Shop, Yen, Cream, Kurv, Singapore Harpers, Fashion Quarterly, Instyle and Rolling Stone Magazine.
